We are pleased to announce that we have broken ground on the construction site for our new student residence building! This residence will provide our researchers with round-the-clock access to their animals and research facilities.
Below is a view of the first of two 35 ft X 60 ft geothermal fields being installed to help generate heat for the new student residence. This system will greatly reduce the environmental impact of the building. The geothermal tubes shown in the picture are located 8.5 ft below grade and are filled with propylene glycol to facilitate heat exchange.
About the Dairy Centre Student Housing Project
The UBC Dairy Centre is an internationally recognized world-class facility supporting dairy cattle research. Each year a large number of students and other researchers from around the globe study at the Centre which is also a modern working dairy farm.
Research and teaching productivity at the Centre depends upon the number of researchers working on-site. The new residence will provide the opportunity for 32 researchers to live on-site and to have access to their experimental animals and research facilities, round-the-clock, 7 days a week.
The new building will strengthen the rich international learning experience that only occurs when students and other researchers share spaces with one another, are close to their research and experience each other’s cultures. We invite you to join us in this endeavour.
